My conscience nagged me. I knew I shouldn’t be up here. But a more pervasive thought took root in my mind. Why was there no keypad in the elevator allowing anyone to just walk in off the street and enter the building? It didn’t make sense. I checked my watch again: 3:15 a.m. Our shifts would end at six, according to James. On the far wall was a large blue arrow pointing left with the words Cryonics Lab over it. My heart thudded but I’d come this far. I need to know, I kept telling myself. I followed the length of the main warehouse all the way down, counting my steps. One hundred forty-five steps later, I was directly under the blue arrow. To my left was a door with a keypad, finally, leading to another large space, darkened inside except for a tiny blue light. I looked overhead and didn’t see any cameras, so I returned my gaze to the keypad. It wasn’t worth randomly trying access codes. But I did continue down the other row now, this time seeing an array of large, steel containers about eight feet tall and maybe four feet wide, with thermometers on the front and separate keypads. Oh my God, Anders. What are you doing up here? I tried to put the story together in my mind while fumbling my way back to the elevators. Dr. Ek was using society’s expendables on which to conduct experiments—what kind I still wasn’t sure—storing them in these steel containers and regulating their temperatures until he was ready for them on the second floor.

Jesus Christ, I think he’s burning people alive.

I took a quick photo of the steel containers and one of the Cryonics Lab arrows on the wall and texted them to Jonas. I may need backup here soon, I typed.

On my way, he wrote back. I didn’t think Jonas was healed up from his assault. I also knew nothing could keep him from a rescue operation, especially for me.
